Our story

One building. A new chapter.

How listening to Broomhill helped shape a welcoming centre for community, wellbeing and faith.

Listening before building

A building with a purpose still to discover.

After regular congregational worship came to an end, Sheffield Methodist Circuit began a careful process of listening and discernment about the building's future.

Over two years of consultation, local families, students, schools, churches and community partners helped identify what Broomhill needs: inclusive places to connect, support wellbeing and explore spirituality beyond traditional models of church.

That listening shaped investment in a climbing wall, a creative play town, accessible spaces and a new approach to community building.

Then

A church shaped by service

Broomhill Methodists have long understood this building as a place for service as well as worship. When the centre was developed, the needs of families, students and older people were considered, and social housing formed part of the wider vision. The congregation later became smaller, and regular congregational worship at Broomhill ended in 2018. The building, however, still had a purpose to discover.

Turning point

Not closing the story

When one form of church life ended, the Circuit paused, listened and asked what kind of presence could serve Broomhill now.

Now

A community with many doors in

Mini Broomhill, Broomhill Climbing Works, Climbing Church, community events, room hire and local partnerships offer different ways to enter the life of the centre. The activities matter in themselves, but they also make space for friendships, mutual support, volunteering, spiritual curiosity and new ideas shaped with local people.
